Legshed, or Good Sayings, in Tibetan Tradition

with Lobsang Zatul

Legshed, literally “good sayings,” are a special genre of poetry in Tibetan literature. Not generally considered Dharma, they are more like advice (labja) or guidance for daily life. They show us the distinction between right and wrong behavior.

Good sayings are usually written in four lines, where the first two give the meaning and next two an example or comparison. The first two lines show the quality of a right or wise behavior and the next two lines the wrong or foolish behavior.

These short poems are useful tool for anyone interested in learning Tibetan as well as anyone who could use some sound advice. Participants will be able to taste the special flavor of this unique aspect of Tibetan literature.
