These days the Longsal that usually welcomes us at the entrance of Merigar is being embellished with a cover of pure gold leaf!

To do this, it was necessary to move the Longsal to a protected area of the Gönpa, where it was laid out, and a recent metal gilding technique was used, the same used for the Stupa of Chanteloube, in Dordogne, France. For each section, firstly a layer of epoxy resin transformed into glue is spread. Then, after a waiting period which depends on the humidity of the air and can be between 40 minutes or more than an hour, it is possible to apply the very thin and volatile gold leaf. Once that the glue is completely dry (about 24 hours) the gold leaf will be vitrified, and will thus resist the touch and the weather conditions. 24 carat gold does not oxidize. With this technique the gold will still be bright, but not perfectly smooth.

Tanita Ferrari, expert decorator, is coordinating the project, managing the volunteers who are doing this work with her.
